Leila Walter is a Cape Town-based artist whose work explores the materiality of human experience. Inspired by the life cycle of materials and our interaction with them —from raw, natural forms, through production, consumption and disposal—she is interested in how mental and social processes shape the material world and how this relationship reflects and influences our connection to land, culture, and the self.
Working primarily with natural fibers, textile waste and vintage fabrics, Leila creates intricate textile artworks through which she explores the possiblilty of finding simplicity within percieved chaos. She seeks to transmute the weight of material reality into beauty through her deeply intuitively driven creative practice in which the very human experience of tactile and emotional sensation is central. She creates abstract works which explore embodied experience and nurture a sense of ecological, personal and collective wellbeing.
A graduate of the Michaelis School of Fine Art at UCT (2014), Leila Walter has participated in group exhibitions in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Her work promotes a philosophy of simplicity and sustainability, aiming to inspire wellbeing and harmony between human action and ecological balance.
