LEILA ATELIER presents MATERIAL CONSCIOUSNESS
A collection of original artworks by founder Leila Walter, expanding the studio’s artisanal functional textile practice to encompass her evolving fine art practice.
Working with natural fibres and textile waste, this collection consists of three intricate textile artworks through which the artist explores our collective material reality. She invites a meditation on and reimagining of how our decisions can either impact or nurture ecological, personal and collective wellbeing through the transformation and transmutation of the sometimes unbearable weight of material reality into beauty through balance lightness and cohesive transparency.
Leila Walter is a Cape Town-based artist whose work explores the interplay between materiality and consciousness. Inspired by the lifecycle of materials—from raw, natural forms through production, consumption and disposal—she explores how mental and social processes shape the material world and how this relationship reflects and influences our connection to land, culture, and the self.
A graduate of the Michaelis School of Fine Art at UCT (2014), Leila Walter has participated in group exhibitions in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Her work promotes a philosophy of simplicity and sustainability, aiming to inspire wellbeing and harmony between human action and ecological balance.
